Every day in August

Must. Write. Down. Cute. Things.

Tomorrow I'll start Every Day in August.  I will write something every day.  But it may mean a boring post...or 25.  I'm really not in the writing groove.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I must apologize to Andrew for always blaming him when the games Lily and Michael play fall apart.  Today he is at a friend's house.  Lily and Michael were playing in the front yard as I did some much needed weeding.  I had suggested that they create an outdoor restaurant...using chalk to draw tables and a door and a kitchen on the pavement.  I would come and visit their restaurant when it was up and running.
They happily drew and ran around...for about 2 minutes.  Then Lily started screaming and proceeded to have a 15 minute melt-down.
Apparently, this restaurant needed a satellite to keep an eye on potential bad guys.  Lily felt that one satellite was sufficient for our current terror level alert status.  Michael felt they needed at least 3.
And so they fought.
I was trying my hardest not to laugh in Lily's face.  Really?  Imaginary satellites drawn in sidewalk chalk on your driveway restaurant?  Really?  Worth fighting over?
-sigh-
They are watching tv again.  Surprise.
Oh, Johnny!
Remember how much I've moaned and groaned about having kids too close together?  Remember my panic at having two babies at the same time?
Well, that was legitimate.  It kind of sucked and was really really hard.
But my pay back has come.  Times a million.
Michael and Lily are the best of friends.  This is aided not only by their close age, but also by the fact that Michael is a complacent, easy-going guy willing to be bossed around by his sister.  They play happily together for hours on end...as long as big brother doesn't try and mix in.  But let's leave irritating, play-ending Andrew out of this for a moment.  If I can distract Andrew away from them or he is absent for another reason, they often just disappear into their own pretend world.  They play family or school or cats or alligators or they go on a trip or they cook up something magical in their restaurant.
Really, the games are quite varied.  But there seems to be a common thread:  Johnny.
If they are playing kitchen, you might hear this:
"Hey, Michael, who spilled this soup all over the floor?"
-exaggerated sigh- "It was Johnny!"
If they are playing alligators, you might hear this:
"Oh, no!  Michael!  Look what Johnny ate!"
If they are playing school, you might hear this:
"Okay, class.  It's time to go outside to play for a while."
"But Johnny just pushed me!"
"No, Johnny!  You are bad!  Time out chair!"
And on and on.  Johnny is the evil-doer in all their games.  I don't know where the name came from, but it is friggin' hilarious to listen in on their play and always hear them berating little Johnny for his misdeeds.
Damn Johnny.
(as a side note, annoying big brother happens to be Andrew JOHN...so perhaps the name comes from something after all...)
Home
Here we are.  Home again.  Kiawah went by too fast...as usual.
Pictures will come later, when I get them from my sister and my parents.  We were terrible...again...about taking photos.  There is just too much fun stuff to do with 3 very fun little people to stop and take pictures.
We guessed that our kids' ages would make this a near perfect year.  We were nearly correct.
Highlights:
--No naps!  For the first time since having kids, we didn't need to scratch out time for naps.  And we filled our days from morning till night.  Lots of bike riding, beach surfing, and play time.  It was exhausting, but so so much fun.
--Beach!  Everyone loved the water and for the first few days everyone wanted to go out pretty deep.  Which was tiring and stressful for the adults.  But they were having such a good time, we couldn't exactly pull them out.  By the end of the week, high tide encouraged them to play in the sand more (less walking to get water).
--Biking!  We biked every day and visited places far enough away I haven't been since bringing babies to Kiawah.  Andrew was a trooper on his bike, Lily eventually embraced the tandom bike we stuck on the back of Jeff's, and Michael was in easy street riding behind with the whole carrier to himself.  It was...awesome.
--Crabbing!  This year we took a special excursion with a naturalist and a boat captain.   We took a lovely boat ride down a local creek (read: tidal river), threw some raw chicken parts on the end of a rope into the water, and voila!  Crabs.  The kids had a blast and we are certain that next year we can do it all by ourselves.
I'll do a post on each kids' vacation next!
