Hawk Mountain

Last Wednesday, we had no school...again.  Thank you Jewish holidays!  Jeff decided to take the day off and we headed up to our favorite place in the fall...the Pocono Mountains.  This time we tried a new place, Hawk Mountain.  After going to a raptor presentation last winter, we learned that raptors migrate right through the Poconos...and we were determined to go witness it.  Hawk Mountain is famous for their raptors...the updrafts are perfect or something.  We were excited.

The day before we went, 74 broad tipped hawks were spotted.  3 bald eagles.  Etc. etc.

When we went, it was cloudy.  The air doesn't move correctly for soaring when it is cloudy.  So we saw...a few turkey vultures and an osprey.

But it was an AWESOME park.  Fantastic trails that were slightly challenging for the kids, but not frustratingly so.  Lots and lots of lookouts to take breaks.  Beautiful scenery.  We will go again.  On a sunny day.
Taking ANOTHER snack break.
 Andrew searching desperately for raptors.
Michael fell while climbing the rocks.  He was a billy goat the whole time, but was quite tired by the end.

I love this shot of Andrew.
Yet ANOTHER snack time.  But for the record, Lily was AWESOME.  She even face planted on a rock and got up and kept walking.  She was considerably slower than the boys (wisely so), but she never complained and got really excited about the trail and what we were seeing...or not seeing as it was.
